Molecular Approaches to Malaria (MAM) is arguably the largest conference in the malaria researcher's calendar and takes place in Australia every 4 years. The 6th MAM conference took place in Lorne (just outside of Melbourne/Geelong) from 23-27th February 2020. Next stop: 2024!
BioMalPar at EMBL Heidelberg is a yearly malaria conference with labs from around the world. A great place to meet other malaria researchers. This year's BioMalPar meeting was virtual and took place from 25-27th of May, 2021. Next year's event is scheduled for the 23-25th of May, 2022. Keep an eye on the website for details!
Molecular Parasitology Meeting (MPM) at Woods Hole in Falmouth, Massachusetts is an annual meeting of parasitologists, with malaria research featuring heavily in the line-up each year. Another great experience for researchers of malaria parasites. The next MPM is the 32nd annual MPM from 05-09th October, 2021. This will be the first hybrid MPM conference, with both virtual and in-person attendance.
Every two years, Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) hold a specific Malaria conference in Europe, bringing together internationally renowned scientists in the field. The 2021 Malaria GRC was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the next Malaria GRC due in 2023. Keep an eye on the website for updates and information on past conferences.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20th International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria has been postponed until 24-28th October, 2022. This is sure to be a large, international event so regularly check the website for updates if you are interested!
The British Society for Parasitology (BSP) Spring Meeting each year features many leading UK and international malaria researchers showcasing their work. Until 2020, the BSP Spring meeting was held in a different location within the UK each year. After postponing BSP 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual BSP meeting went online in June 2021 as a virtual "Parasites Online" 2021 conference, proving to be very successful! The German Society for Parasitology hold an annual meeting that often features quite a few Plasmodium talks and posters. If you can't get to some of the larger conferences such as MAM or ASTMH, or want something a little closer to the European continent, this annual conference is ideal. The 29th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Parasitology was held online from the 15-17th of March 2021. No details on the 30th meeting yet, but it will most likely be held in March, 2022!
The SBSP hold regular symposia around Europe and also hold an International Conference of SBSP every 2 years. SBSP meetings are general parasitology meetings but with a strong Plasmodium presence nonetheless. The 9th SBSP conference was held virtually from the 21-23 April, 2021. The next big SBSP event will be ICOPA 2022 in association with the Danish Society for Parasitology (DSP)!
The ASTMH has an Annual Meeting in North American (USA or Canada) each year (generally around October/November). The next meeting (2021) will be from the 17-21 November, 2021 and is ASTMH's first hybrid #TropMed, with a virtual component and in-person conference in Maryland, USA! This conference is not solely malaria research but is still a big conference that attracts quite a few Plasmodium/malaria researchers.
Another great annual parasitology conference with a heavy Plasmodium/malaria presence! This year's annual ASP meeting was an online Parasitravaganza in June, 2021! So keep an eye on the ASP website for 2022 conference updates!
The International Conference on Plasmodium vivax Research takes place every two years and brings together world leaders specifically working in P. vivax malaria. The dedicated @ICPVR2019 Twitter page provides updates. The latest ICPvR took place at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France from the 26th-28th June, 2019. The next conference was scheduled to take place in India in 2021, but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The International Conference on Malaria and Related Haemosporidian Parasites of Wildlife is held every 4 years (just like MAM) and was last held in Beijing, China in 2018. This conference will suit the many avian malaria and wildlife malaria scientists out there that would like to meet outside of a largely human malaria conference. The 5th "Wildlife Malaria" Conference will be a hybrid conference of virtual attendance and an in-person event at Bielefeld, Germany, from the 20-23 March, 2022!
Another hybrid malaria conference in 2021 to keep an eye on is the Malaria in Melbourne (MiM) conference that takes place every two years in Melbourne, Australia. The 2021 event will be a hybrid event, with online attendance and potentially an in-person event on the night of the 28th of October in Melbourne! Keep abreast of location updates at the MiM website.
Malaria Vaccines for the World (MVW) is a focussed conference, with talks that are very specific to malaria vaccine production. The last such conference ran from 8-10th of May, 2019 and there may be a "MVW 2022" event in May 2022 in Spain. I will update when more information becomes available.
The Indian Society for Parasitology generally have an annual National Congress of Parasitology, often with a large number of malaria researchers attending. The most recent event was the 30th National Congress of Parasitology & Global Summit on Malaria Elimination, taking place in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from the 26-28 September, 2019. There are no future conferences scheduled at present.
Every four years, the International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA) conference occurs. This large event is usually well-attended by parasitologists from all fields and the next conference (ICOPA 2020) is the 15th conference of this kind. It will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from the 21-26th of August, 2022. There are also dedicated Facebook and Twitter pages at @ICOPAXVdk and @ICOPAnhagen2022 respectively.
The Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) conference takes place every year in a different African country and brings together African scientists and their collaborators who work in 1. Mosquito Control, and 2. Control of mosquito-borne diseases. Malaria control strategies feature heavily at this conference. It is also a very affordable conference, making it easier for African scientists around the continent to attend. This year's annual PAMCA conference takes place virtually, from 20-22nd September, 2021.
The South African Medical Research Council Office of Malaria Research (OMR) runs an annual Malaria Research Conference, usually in a city within South Africa. This year's event was a virtual conference from 3-4th August, 2021. Keep an eye on the OMR website for 2022 updates!
